Bee Rescue

We have been busy building our apiary for the spring. We got a call a week or so ago from a Canberra resident that had two bee colonies in their back yard! One of them had set up in a possum box in a tree; bees love possum boxes, possums aren’t so keen on bees. The other colony had set up an open colony in a neighboring hakea. With some careful planning we successfully extracted both colonies. Lucky both colonies were very calm, Tim was only stung once.

The possum box was pretty straight forward, though it was very well secured to the tree. The open colony was quite the adventure, we first had to prune the tree to get to the colony, we then carefully cut the branches it was attached to and lowered it into a box. From there we were able carefully remove the layers of comb and attach it to new wooden frames, then into a nice cosy hive. All the bees now have a new home in our ever growing apiary. If a bee swarm has found a home in your Canberra garden, send us a message on florapod@florapod.com.au and we will come and get them for you.
